Got Fruit: Goodness

summer series got fruitColossians 1:9-10
For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.

Goodness is a characteristic of love which is seen through good works.  Each of us was created unique and individual being called God’s handiwork. Each of us has a purpose in life and we are to do the good works that God planned for us long ago. Just think about that for a moment… you were created to do good works.

So why did I emphasize that?  Because if you were created to do good works, then that means you have the capacity to do good. It becomes a choice…will I choose to do good or not… As we continue our summer series, I want you to think about whether or not you regularly choose to do good works.

Choosing to do good or not…

Have you ever thought about why people make the choice not to do good?  Have you ever thought about why you choose not to do good? I can say that when I have made the choice not to do good my focus was on me…selfish.  Goodness is a characteristic of love, so when I don’t do good I’m probably, most likely, pretty certain that I am violating the love commandment.

Good comes out of the heart

So what is considered a good work anyway? It is a task, a deed or an action that is intrinsically good, good in nature or good whether it be seen to be so or not.  The Bible says that you are to let your light shine. How?  Remember those things God planned long ago for you to do during your lifetime.  You let your light shine by doing good works. Your actions when fruitful bring glory to God. It is honors God when your actions are good.

So how does one flow in goodness? The main way to see the fruit of goodness in your life is to stay connected to the vine. The vine is the source and allows us to produce or show forth the fruit of the Spirit which is love.  Goodness is one of the many demonstrations or characteristics of love. The other way to flow in goodness is to be mindful to store good in your heart. Protect the gateways to your heart or your spirit… the things you put in front of your eyes, the things you allow in your ears and the things you speak out of your mouth.

It is up to you to choose good and to demonstrate goodness. You know you were created to do good works. So what will you choose?

Remember to be REAL…
