Expectation – a confident belief or strong hope that a particular event will happen; a mental image of something expected, often compared to its reality; a standard of conduct or performance expected by or of somebody.
Do you have expectations of others (friends and family)? Do you have expectations of an entity (employer, church, government)? Do others have expectations of you? How are expectations communicated? Do you tell others exactly what you expect from them? I find that at times I have expectations of others without expressing what those expectations are. I assume that based on the role of the person that he or she knows what is expected; not really fair…huh?
Well, God does not assume that we just know, He explicitly tells us in His Word what He expects of us. The Father expects us to live by faith (Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:11, Hebrews 10:38). The Bible also informs us that without faith it is impossible to please God. That seems to me a pretty clear expectation of how we are to live our lives…by FAITH. Living by faith helps us to live a confident life as we trust in God and the truth of His promises.
We should ask ourselves: Are we living our lives according to the Father’s expectations?
