Psalm 119:1-2 (NLT)
Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the Lord. Joyful are those who obey his laws and search for him with all their hearts.
Joy: feelings of great happiness or pleasure, especially of an elevated or spiritual kind.
A few years back my pastor wrote a book entitled Happiness Matters. It sold like hot cakes (you know I’ve always wondered how that saying came to be so, but I guess that’s for another time). Anyway, the book sold rather quickly. People seemed to be craving the knowledge of how to be happy and live a happier life. The book makes the following statement:
The truth is that happiness was never meant to be an illusive game of hide and seek, a prize hidden behind the many doors of life.”
It is interesting that is the very thought that people have. Many think that happiness is just beyond their reach. Some look at another’s life to gauge their own level of happiness. Others think that if they could just get this or that, then they will be happy.
The book goes on to remind us of this point:
You can’t fight for happiness; you can’t win happiness; you can’t buy happiness. Happiness is a choice. It is an attitude that only YOU can control.”
The Bible tells us that we are blessed, joyful, happy when we follow the Lord’s instructions…when we obey His laws…when we search for Him with all our hearts.
Are you seeking more happiness or joy in your life? Could the answer be simply, choosing to make Him a priority?
