Proverbs 19:16
He who obeys instructions guards his life, but he who is contemptuous of his ways will die.

Our Father is continually guiding and giving us INSTRUCTIONS.  There are times when we cannot hear him because of all the noise and distractions around us.  And there are times when we choose to listen selectively. You know what I’m talking about.  Listening selectively – when you hear the part you do not mind doing, but pretend you did not hear the part that you do not want to do.  Let’s admit it; we have all experienced selective hearing in our lives.  Whether it has been at home with your family or at work with your colleagues there has been a time when you communicated some instructions, but not all of those instructions were carried out.

We need to not only discipline ourselves to listen to God, but we also have to discipline ourselves to follow His instructions… discipline ourselves to obey what we have been asked to do.  Did you know that partial obedience is really disobedience?  Society tries to tell us today that it is better to do a partial job then not to do a job at all.  But that is just not true.  There is safety in completing the instructions we have been given.  The Word says whoever obeys instructions guards his life.

Just imagine for a moment that you are having family and friends over to your house for a big Sunday dinner.  Everyone is bringing a dish to share.  You are responsible for the 10 lb roast in which you need at least three hours to cook at a low temperature setting.  Before you know it, time has gotten away from you and there is only an hour until dinner.  You decide to modify the instructions.  You increase the cooking temperature to make allowance for the shortened amount of time.  On the outside it looks like the roast is cooking just fine.  Everyone usually enjoys your tender, juicy roast and their mouths are watering just thinking about the first bite.  However, when it’s time to eat, the roast is dry, chewy and unfortunately not very tasty at all.  As you can see, modifying the instructions did not yield the same results.

If we desire God’s best for our lives, then we have to whole-heartedly follow God’s instructions.  Has He given you any instructions that you are not following?

Remember to be REAL…
