Do you remember the saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” That little saying was meant to be a form of protection, meaning do not pay attention to what people say; ignore their mean words. I am sure that many of us are quite good at ignoring mean words from people we do not consider close. But what about our friends and family; those people in whom we are invested? The truth is that words really do matter!
The Bible instructs us to be slow to speak and quick to listen (James 1:19). We remind our kids – God gave you two ears and one mouth, so you should listen twice as much as you talk. Sometimes I wonder if we adults take that advice to heart. Our words should encourage, uplift and edify. Our words should be kind and full of grace. Our words should flow out of a heart of love.
Words do matter; they are life or death (Proverbs 18:21)… What words are you speaking into the lives of those around you?
